Hexham STW Refurbishment

We are investing over £4.9 million to improve Hexham Sewage Treatment Works. This investment is being undertaken to address asset condition and performance concerns meeting the demands of the upstream drainage catchment. Undertaking this refurbishment work will improve the sites compliance resilience, reducing the likelihood of future pollution incidents, minimising operator intervention improving site Health & Safety. Our sewage treatment works aids NWL in improving the quality of rivers and coastal waters for the benefit of people, the environment and wildlife.

Time for another Hexham STW Refurb update: The over pumping is now in place to recirculate the flows coming through the new filters into the old filters so that the wastewater is fully treated whilst the new filters are seeded. This process could take 4-5 months but given the warming weather we hope the bug will establish themselves much sooner. The structural repairs to the Detritor are complete and we are looking to reinstall the refurbished grit rake 1st May and commission the entire kit soon after. Masonry repairs to the distribution chamber have been completed. Helical bars were grouted into the mortar between the bricks to tie the whole structure together and reinforce areas of cracking then the whole structure was repointed. Looking forward we’ll turn our attention back to the inlet works area, installing further ductwork and slabs for the MCC, compactor and wash water booster. We will also core into the existing balancing tank for future connection to the new inlet works. Thanks for taking the time to read and have a look at the attached photos for further information. Hi everyone, Time for another update for Hexham STW Refurbishment: The work to refurbish the existing Detritor and Grit Rake has hit a snag when we have found some structural significant cracking in the ground structure around a mounting point which will take considerable force. We’ll be removing the grit rake again to carry out some concrete repairs in the near future. We are continuing to install new Ts on the pipework around the distribution chamber to allow the filters to be operated without using the distribution chamber if and when necessary. Three of the four are mostly complete. We have pushed the seeding/over-pumping back a week to allow for the T’s to be completed and some tweaks to the set up of the pumps now that they have to share room with the T’s. The new inlet screens slab has been blinded out ready for the Formwork, Reinforcement and Concrete (FRC) sub-contractor who started preparing shuttering today. As mentioned previously, the continuing traffic management outside the site is not part of our works and is controlled by another contractor - emergency numbers should be displayed on the traffic management signage. Hi everyone, Spring has sprung and we’re still moving forward with the refurbishment at Hexham STW. Works to repair and re-waterproof the existing distribution chamber have reached a point where the chamber can be brought back into use rather than relying on expensive temporary pumps. The final epoxy coating is still to be done, but this requires a number of consecutive dry days so we will come back to that later in the year. The Detritor is being reinstalled as I type, though the whole process will take a couple of weeks. Anyone nearby may be able to see the crane lifting the newly refurbished and re-painted pieces into place. Work at Peth Head SPS to alter the pump set up and thereby smooth out the flows was completed last week. This should make the STW run more efficiently by providing more constant flows into the site rather than stop/start. Construction of the 2nd recirculation manhole is complete ready for the seeding of the new filter which is expected to start WC01/04/24. The seeding could take up to 20 weeks, but it is hoped to be complete much sooner. Work on the new inlet works is also underway. We have excavated down and broken out some old concrete structures, installed ducting and stoned up ready for blinding concrete by the end of the week and formwork reinforcement and concreting to start in the near future. Hi everyone, Works are progressing well at Hexham STW Refurbishment, especially now we are getting extended periods of fine weather. Works to repair and re-waterproof the existing distribution chamber are going well, with some extra labour on site and weekend working to try to get complete while the weather hold. All the repair and much of the waterproofing is finished and we will hopefully be applying the final epoxy layer next week. We are also busy installing some Ts on the distribution pipework which will allow the filters to be operated without using the distribution chamber should it require further works in the future. The Detritor continues to be refurbished offsite but is expected to be reinstalled WC 18/03/24. Work has begun over at Peth Head SPS to alter the pump set up and thereby smooth out the flows coming into Hexham STW. This should take around 2 weeks. Construction of the second recirculation manhole has been put on the back burner until the T’s are in place because we need either the Ts or the distribution chamber complete before we can begin the recirculation. Hi everyone, Works are progressing at Hexham STW Refurbishment though the wet weather continues to provide challenges. Works to extend the water main to the intended location of the new inlet works are complete as much as possible until the new inlet works is under construction. The Detritor continues to be refurbished offsite and is expected to be away around 3 more weeks. Works to repair and re-waterproof the existing distribution chamber are continuing and will take up to 4 more weeks depending on weather and flow issues. I am pleased to say the distribution columns and arms on the new filters are in place, meaning the filters are structurally complete and ready for seeding. Construction of the second recirculation manhole is underway. On completion of this manhole and the waterproofing works to the distribution chamber, we will be able to start passing flows through the new filter beds, which will gradually bring them into operation over a number of weeks. Looking ahead, the electrical alterations to improve the operation of Peth Head SPS pumping into Hexham STW is now expected to commence in a week or two and ground works for the new inlet works at the STW are imminent. Hi everyone, We are progressing well at Hexham STW Refurbishment despite the extremely poor weather causing some issues. Works to extend the water main to the intended location of the new inlet works are continuing intermittently along the internal site road. The Detritor removal was completed and is being refurbished offsite and is expected to be away around 6 more weeks. Works to repair and re-waterproof the existing distribution chamber have commenced and are expected to take 4-6 weeks. Installation of the distribution arms on the new filters should start next week. When the arms and the waterproofing works are complete, we can start to seed the new filter beds to bring them into operation of the course of a number of weeks. We are also starting to look at works at Peth Head Sewage Pumping Station which needs minor adjustments to go along with the main works at Hexham STW to make the flows more efficient. Please note that the traffic management outside the site is not part of our works and is controlled by another contractor - emergency numbers should be displayed on the traffic management signage.
