Tunstall Reservoir Improvement Works

Together with our supply partners Esh Stantec we plan to carry out improvement works to Tunstall Reservoir during 2023. These works are needed to ensure the resilience of the reservoir.

Good afternoon,

Can you believe the weather this week, let’s hope we keep it all summer!

Over the last week the team have now connected the Siphon pipework to the new discharge chamber ready for testing and commissioning.

The new headwall to the settlement tank outfall has been installed and the new penstock chamber construction is ongoing.

Concrete slabs within in the spillway have been completed and work area reinstated.

You may see the team working in the field close to the compound while they replace pipework, this will be completed next week, with a further inspection in June.

Good afternoon,

The team have now completed the drainage from the discharge chamber to the settlement tank while the connection of pipework and valves to the discharge chamber are ongoing.

Further pipework is being installed this week and the removal of the existing chamber. Once complete the existing settlement tank will be cleaned.

The team have been working to programe this week despite the weather conditions.

This week the drainage has now been connected to the discharge chamber and backfilling is currently ongoing.

Jetting and CCTV of the spillway drainage has began and will continue to monitor.

The team have completed the concrete poor and have stripped the shutters from the discharge chamber.

Removal of the existing redundant main has begun in preparation for the installation of the outlet drainage.

Temporary access to the spillway has been removed and the work area reinstated.

The team have completed the spillway slabs, and the pipework has been installed up to the discharge chamber.

Wall reinforcement and shuttering is ongoing with trial holes being completed within the area.

Good morning

As the weather has now started to improve, the team are starting to make progress with the spillway works and the last concrete pour will be being completed on Thursday.

The siphon drainage and discharge chamber are now being constructed which will be ongoing for the next 2/3 weeks.

You may also see the levels in the reservoir increase over the next few weeks as they are being closely monitored.

Good morning

Can you believe this weather, hope everyone is well.

The team have now completed the topsoil reinstatement adjacent to the valve house along with the rebuild of the existing dry-stone wall.

The team are halfway through the installation of spillway slabs and are currently excavating and removing blocks for the 4th slab to be installed.

Installation of the drainage pipework continues in readiness for the chamber construction.

Good afternoon all and a Happy New Year!

Prior to the Christmas break the team were working on drilling operations while Northumbrian Water are continuing to lower and monitor reservoir levels to allow our essential works to be carried out.

The team continue to progress with work in order to install the siphon drainage. Reinstatements are being actioned where they can, to cause minimal disruption.

Over the next few weeks, the existing stone wall will be rebuilt, and the crew will continue with the installation of the spillway concrete slabs.

Good morning,

I hope everyone is doing well.

Northumbrian Water are continuing to lower and monitor reservoir levels to allow our essential works to be carried out.

The team are continue drilling operations with our specialist sub-contractor on the reservoir embankments, drilling down into the existing tunnel in preparation of the proposed Geopolymer injection works which shall form part of the stabilisation of the Reservoir itself.

Further investigation works are to be carried out on the Reservoir/tunnel prior to the Geopolymer injection works commencing, we anticipate the work to start Monday 23 October 2023 for a period of 3 weeks.

The team continue with the proposed spillway works, by uplifting and removing the existing spillway blocks in readiness to install the proposed concrete under slab drainage and associated manholes, this work is due to begin Wednesday 18 October 2023.

Over the next few days, the team plan to install a crane pad/mat along with a site visit of an all-terrain crane for lifting operations for the Spillway steel reinforcement. Lifting it into place for the works to commence.  

Crew are also planning the new Reservoir Siphon pipework to commence Monday 23 October 2023.
