Springwell Enhancements Project

Northumbrian Water proposes to construct a new underground service reservoir on land it owns off Mount Lane, along with related pipe work in the local area, in a £56m project to commence Spring 2023, following preparatory work on site. The proposed project will not only make the water supply to customers in Springwell Village and the surrounding areas more secure, but will also enable us to support the wider Wearside and South Tyneside areas with a more reliable and resilient water supply for many years to come. The reservoir would strengthen and future-proof the company’s existing network in the area, providing storage for around 50,000 properties in South Tyneside. In addition the new reservoir will enable us to provide improved resilience to the water networks to the east of Springwell Village, benefiting a further 200,000 properties in South Tyneside and Wearside.

Update by Sarah Jayne Parvin

We're pleased to provide you with the latest progress on various segments of the Springwell Enhancements Project.

Mount Lane Road Closure

The four-week closure of Mount Lane is currently in effect. After some initial challenges and adjustments, including repositioned signage, we expect smoother operations moving forward. The closure is set to conclude on May 24th.

Eighton Banks Progress and Water Supply Interruption

Pipelaying continues towards the Mount Community Centre. We have scheduled a water supply interruption for May 9th, from 9:00 AM to 11:45 AM, this is to allow localised pipe realignment. Affected properties were notified on Wednesday. Preparatory excavations at the junction of Rear of Thomas Street and Galloping Green Lane will start on May 7th, with road reinstatement by the end of May 10th. Traffic will be restricted on this section throughout the week, google image and location below.

Footpath Updates at Eighton Banks

The team is assessing the reopening of public right of way footpaths near Eighton Banks towards the end of May. We will provide updates as they become available.

Reservoir Construction Progress

The reservoir structure is visibly shaping up with the next concrete pour planned for early June. Current work includes wall infills, and the placement of columns and roof beams, take a look at this Video, to see progress so far.

Trenchless Pipeline Directional Drilling

This week, directional drilling for pipeline sections on land adjacent to Broom Court is underway, with plans to drill under Springwell Road next week. This drilling approach has eliminated the need for road closures that traditional open-cut methods would necessitate.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we progress with these essential enhancements. Should you have any questions or feedback, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Thanks

Sarah
